Vijay Varma’s Captain Sharan Dev keeps his calm while prioritising the safety of passengers onboard the hijacked New Delhi-bound flight IC-814 in the trailer of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, dropped by Netflix on Monday.

Based on the real-life incidents that took place both on and off the plane in 1999, the two-minute-56-second-long trailer begins with Vijay’s pilot welcoming the passengers on board during its take-off from Kathmandu. Subsequent scenes show the plane getting hijacked and the terrorists unleashing terror. What follows is the looming threat that sends the Indian officials on ground, played by Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur, into a tizzy.

As Dia Mirza’s reporter criticises Vijay’s character for not stalling the terrorists during the plane’s landing in Amritsar, his wife, played by Pooja Gaur, expresses hope for his return and the safety of the passengers. The rest of the teaser showcases the tussle between the Indian government and the hijackers to come to a middle ground.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack also stars Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Amrita Puri, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Patralekha, Anupam Tripathi, Kanwaljit Singh, Aditya Srivastava, Sushant Singh and Yashpal Sharma.

The New Delhi-bound flight IC-814 was hijacked on December 24, 1999, when five terrorists took control of the plane 40 minutes after its departure from Kathmandu. The aircraft, carrying around 180 passengers, was held hostage for seven days. It flew from Kathmandu to Amritsar, then to Lahore for refuelling, and subsequently to Dubai. From Dubai, it flew to Taliban-controlled Kandahar, where the hostages were finally released on December 31, 1999.

One of the significant outcomes of this hijacking was the release of dreaded terrorists by the Government of India in exchange for the hostages.

“Uncovering the true, gripping story of IC 814: India’s longest hijacking— 188 lives, 7 harrowing days of courage, tough decisions, and survival. Based on true events - IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, a limited series, arrives on 29 August, only on Netflix,” Netflix wrote alongside the video shared on YouTube.
