Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s latest film 12th Fail has emerged as the only Indian film to make it to IMDb’s Global Top 250 list of movies, bagging the 50th position, the filmmaker’s production house announced via an Instagram post on Wednesday.

The film features right below the 1988 thriller Cinema Paradiso, a movie the filmmaker “worships”, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films’s Instagram page wrote, sharing a screenshot of the IMDb list.

“VVC (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) has spent his life talking to everyone about how much he worships Cinema Paradiso and 12th Fail has now secured the #50 spot in the top 250 films of all time, a rank below the film he worships,” the production house wrote alongside a screenshot of the ranking of the film at the 50th position on the list.

12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankr, is ranked alongside other movies like Modern Times (1936) and The Intouchables (2011) on the list.

“I’m still that little boy from Kashmir. To see my film right next to Cinema Paradiso… What do I even say? I can now die in peace,” Chopra said in a statement.

12th Fail, chronicling the life of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma (Vikrant) who overcame poverty and cracked UPSC, was released in theatres on October 27 last year.

After its OTT release on December 29, the film acquired the topmost position on IMDb’s list of highest-rated Indian movies of all time, surpassing even Hollywood hits Oppenheimer and Barbie.

12th Fail also recently received praise at the Macau Asia-Europe Young Cinema Film Festival, where it was selected as the closing film and received a standing ovation.

“‘Uss Chauhan se bolne ki usne ek IPS ke baap se panga lo hai’ was the line that got the loudest cheers as #12thFail stole hearts at Macau Asia-Europe Young Cinema Film Festival,” Chopra wrote on Instagram, sharing moments from the film festival.

12th Fail is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
