Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey and Medha Shankar, has emerged as the highest-rated Indian film of all time on IMDb with a rating of 9.2 out of 10.
Securing the foremost position on the list of top 250 Indian movies as rated by IMDb users, 12th Fail has surpassed some of the highest-grossing Hollywood blockbusters of 2023, including Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (rated 6.9), Guardians of the Galaxy (rated 7.9), Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (rated 8.4) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (rated 8.6).
Based on a biography by Anurag Pathak, the Vikrant Massey-starrer recounts the inspiring story of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame poverty to accomplish his dream of becoming an IPS officer.
As 12th Fail continues to garner love and praise, Manoj has been grabbing the headlines. On January 8, filmmaker Rohit Shetty shared a picture with the IPS officer on Instagram, calling him the ‘real hero’ of the movie.
“Meet the real hero of “12th Fail” Manoj Kumar Sharma, had the honour of working with him during covid, at that time he was serving for Mumbai police… if you have not seen 12th fail please do watch… it’s an inspiring story specially for students and youngsters,” wrote the director, whose maiden web series Indian Police Force will hit Prime Video on January 19.
Released theatrically on October 27, 2023, 12th Fail emerged as a sleeper hit garnering over Rs 66 crores worldwide. The film premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on December 29, 2023.
The remaining four movies in the list of top five Indian films of all time include the 1993 animated feature Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, Mani Ratnam's Nayakan, Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Gol Maal, and actor R. Madhavan's directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.
