Rajinikanth’s gritty cop vows to hunt down a woman’s murderer in the latest trailer of his 170th film, Vettaiyan The Hunter, which marks the Tamil cinema debut of Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan.
Dropped by Sony Music India on Wednesday, the two-minute-44-second-long-video opens with media outrage over the brutal murder of a woman. As the Kanniyakumari District Police struggle to track down the perpetrator, they face an ultimatum: the killer must be eliminated in an encounter within a week. At this crucial moment, Rajinikanth’s cop steps in, assuring the force that he will capture the murderer in three days.
Even though the criminal turns out to be significantly influential, Rajinikanth remains undeterred. The subsequent clips show him at loggerheads with Amitabh’s Sathyadev over the ethics of encounters.
The video concludes with Rajinikanth delivering powerful punches and taking down goons single-handedly.
The trailer also offers a glimpse of Fahadh Faasil’s Patrick, Manju Warrier’s Thara, Rana Daggubati’s Natraj and Ritika Singh’s Roopa.
Helmed by Jai Bhim director T.J. Gnanavel, Vettaiyan marks a reunion of Rajinikanth and Amitabh, who share the screen together for the first time in 33 years after Mukul S. Anand’s 1991 film Hum.
Anirudh Ravichander has scored the music for Vettaiyan, backed by Lyca Productions. The film marks the fifth collaboration between Rajinikanth and Anirudh following Petta, Darbar and Jailer. Anirudh is also composing the music for Coolie, Rajinikanth’s upcoming film with Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Slated to hit theatres on October 10 in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, Vettaiyan is not the first time Rajinikanth has portrayed a police officer. He most recently donned the khaki uniform in Jailer (2023).
At the box office, Vettaiyan is slated to clash with Suriya's Kanguva as well as the Alia Bhatt-starrer Jigra, which premieres on October 11.
