The star power of Prime Video’s upcoming romantic-comedy Red, White & Royal Blue has increased with the addition of Hollywood actress Uma Thurman, who will play the role of US President Ellen Claremont in the film.
The award-winning actress is known for her roles in movies like Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and 2, Dangerous Liaisons, Pulp Fiction, Batman & Robin and Gattaca among many others. In the movie, she will be playing the role of Claremount, the mother of one of the film’s protagonists Alex Claremont-Diaz, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez.
Speaking about the addition of Thurman to the film, director Matthew Lopez said, “I am overjoyed that Uma will be joining us to play president Claremont. Her intelligence, warmth, and humour are a perfect match for Casey's iconic character. I cannot wait to be on our Oval Office set with her.”
The movie is based on the 2019 New York Times Bestseller of the same name that was written by Casey McQuiston. The Tony Award-winning playwright, Lopez, will be directing from his script. An earlier draft of the script had been written by Ted Malawer.
Actors Nicholas Galitzine, Clifton Collins Jr, Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Ellie Bamber, Aneesh Sheth, Polo Morin, Ahmed Elhaj and Akshay Khanna will star alongside Thurman and Perez. The story of the novel is about the same-sex romance between the son of the US president and the British prince. Perez’s Claremont-Diaz and Prince Henry, played by Nicholas Galitzine, start off as hate-fuelled rivals who are forced to feign friendship due to their public image. However, the two eventually develop a friendship which evolves into romance.
Perez is noted for his roles in the Netflix rom coms Kissing Booth 2 and 3. Galitzine’s recent appearance was as Prince Robert in the 2021 Amazon Studio live-action musical Cinderella starring singer Camila Cabello.
Red, White and Royal Blue will be produced by Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter for Berlanti/Schechter Films. Lopez, McQuiston and Michael McGrath are on-board as the executive producers. The production of the movie is set to start in the UK in June.
