Sohum Shah’s fantasy-horror film Tumbbad, which underperformed at the box office during its original release in 2018, has emerged as the highest-grossing re-release of all time on Wednesday.
Within just 12 days, the re-released version of the Rahi Anil Barve directorial accumulated Rs 27 crore gross, as per industry data-tracking portal Sacnilk, beating the record held by Ghilli. Dharani’s 2004 sports action film starring Vijay and Trisha Krishnan, which had re-released earlier this year, had minted Rs 26 crore gross.
This achievement places Tumbbad ahead of other notable re-releases such as Titanic (Rs 18 crore gross), Sholay 3D (Rs 13 crore gross) and Laila Majnu (Rs 11.50 crore).
During its original run in 2018, Tumbbad had managed to rake in Rs 13.5 crore nett. Tumbbad’s lead actor and co-producer, Sohum Shah also announced the sequel for the fantasy horror film following the success of the re-release at box office.
During its phenomenal run at the box office, Tumbbad trumped the collections of Kareena Kapoor-starrer The Buckingham Murders, which minted Rs 12.5 crore nett during its 12 days of theatrical run. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Malavika Mohanan-starrer Yudhra, which released in theatres on September 20, earned Rs 10.3 crore nett till Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Stree 2 continues its dream run at the domestic box office. The total earnings of the Amar Kaushik-helmed comedy horror film now stands at Rs 608 crore nett.
