A sari-clad Alia Bhatt and a long-haired Ranveer Singh make their romance come alive amidst the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir in the music video of the recently released Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani song Tum Kya Mile, dropped by Saregama Music on Wednesday.

The three-minute-21-second video shows Alia’s Rani imagine the entire song sequence with Ranveer’s Rocky as she comes to terms with her feelings for her love interest. Draped in vibrant Manish Malhotra chiffon saris, Alia looks straight out of a Yash Chopra set, whose filmmaking style was the inspiration behind the song. Ranveer does his part as the charming hero, dancing and serenading Alia.

The scenes are also inspired by some of Yash Chopra’s most iconic songs including Mitwa from the 1989 Sridevi-Rishi Kapoor-starrer Chandni. There are glimpses of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham romance in the music video, with Alia and Ranveer spreading their arms and leaning into each other while lip-syncing to the track.

The song also gives a hint at Alia’s character Rani, who seems to be a journalist in the film. Sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, the romantic track has been composed by Pritam. The end of the music video shows Alia’s Rani holding onto Ranveer as if she is scared of losing him, something that might be explored in the film.

Four hours before the launch of the music video, Karan Johar revealed that the video was in fact inspired by Yash Chopra’s filmmaking. “I remember at the very onset my instinct was that I wanted to film a love song that would unabashadley pay homage to my guru Yash Chopra…. The thinking evolved mind would say “you can’t match it or even dare to emulate it” but the fan boy and the ardent lover of snow, chiffons, the stunning locations of Kashmir and sheer romance got the better of me,” the filmmaker wrote alongside a frame of Alia and Ranveer from the music video.

The shoot was scheduled after the birth of Alia and Ranbir Kapoor’s daughter Raha, who was born on November 6 last year. “This is also the first shoot Alia did after the birth of her angel and I remain in apology for freezing her in Manish Malhotra chiffons,” Karan joked in his note about the shoot. “This one’s for you Yash uncle … Your fan forever , Karan,” he concluded.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marks Karan’s return as a director after a seven-year gap. The 51-year-old filmmaker’s last venture was the 2016 multi-starrer romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani — also starring Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra — is slated for a July 28 release this year.
