Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One makers gave modern-day CGI a miss and built an entire train for an action sequence that eventually ends with the train getting destroyed into pieces after falling off a sabotaged bridge, a behind-the-scenes video shared by Paramount Pictures has revealed.
The video shows actor Tom Cruise shooting the sequence atop the moving train in Norway along with Esai Morales and Hayley Atwell. While Cruise and Morales engage in hand-to-hand combat on the top of the train, Atwell hangs off a train carriage as it moves at a speed of 60 kilometres per hour. In the end, we see the train falling off a bridge destroyed by explosives.
“There was not a surplus of trains available to be wrecked. We had to build the train if we wanted to destroy it.” said writer-director Christopher McQuarrie in the two-minute-31-second-long video.
“We always wanted to do an action sequence involving a train in the film. We wanted to apply our knowledge to something practical and real… Shooting the scene practically was extremely challenging,” he added.
The BTS also shows Morales and Atwell sharing their experience of shooting the challenging sequence on a moving train.
“I’ve done fight scenes before but to do it on a moving train is a trial by fire,” said Morales. Atwell added, ”Not only Tom is fearless, he is always on the lookout for how it will land for the audience.”
Sharing the video on Twitter on Wednesday, Cruise admitted that the sequence was tricky and he can’t wait for the audience to see it. “This train sequence was tricky, but the outcome made it all worth it. I can't wait for everyone to see it come to life!,” he wrote.
