Filmmaker Todd Phillips has shared new photos of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga from his upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux and revealed that the film will hit theatres on October 4.
“Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24,” the 53-year-old filmmaker captioned the pictures posted on Instagram on Thursday.
While Phoenix will reprise his Oscar-winning role as Joker in the new movie, Gaga will step into the shoes of Harley Quinn, a character previously played by Margot Robbie in The Suicide Squad film series.
The first picture shows Phoenix’s Joker with his chalk-white face, ruby red lips and green hair, while Gaga sported a blue floral outfit and let her blonde hair open instead of tying it into two ponytails in the iconic Harley Quinn style. In the next picture, which is black and white, Gaga looks into Phoenix’s impassive eyes and smiles wide, while another monochrome picture shows the duo dancing on a terrace with the background showing several comic-book style buildings.
The pictures also reveal Joker and Harley Quinn’s aesthetic in the film — Joker with his signature red suit and Harley sporting blue.
While the makers have not revealed the plot for the film, the new photos give us a hint that it will cover the first time Joker meets Harley in Arkham Asylum of Gotham City.
Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson and Zazie Beetz are part of the supporting cast.
The 2019 Joker film amassed over USD 1 billion worldwide, making it the first R-rated film to achieve such a feat and the sixth highest grossing film of the year. The film received 11 nods at the Oscars out of which Joaquin won the Best Actor award.
