Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 film Joker, will release on October 4, 2024, revealed filmmaker Todd Phillips on Wednesday, sharing a still of Joaquin Phoenix from the upcoming movie on social media.

Phoenix brought the Batman villain to life in the first Joker movie as a run-of-the-mill Gotham resident named Arthur Fleck. The first movie focused on Fleck’s descent into madness, promising a transition into the formidable villain. Joker: Folie à Deux would take Fleck’s journey and transformation further.

With little known about the storyline of the sequel, the picture shared by Phillips has Phoenix standing in the rain with his eyes closed and face up. He is surrounded by four people, whose faces are not visible, holding colourful umbrellas. “Oct. 4 Thanks for all the messages. Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come,” reads the caption of the image.

Philips had earlier shared pictures of Phoenix’s Joker along with Lady Gaga, who will be featuring as Harley Quinn. The first look we got of the Clown Prince of Crime and his ‘puddin’ was when the director posted a picture of Phoenix in Joker make-up staring at Gaga’s Harley.

Fans got a better look at the actors in character in Phillips’s follow-up post captioned, “That’s a wrap. Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.” He shared a picture of Gaga with smudged make-up and Phoenix with his Joker face and red suit on.
