Kal-El Tuck’s 11-year-old history buff Kevin embarks on a Narnia-esque adventure across several time periods with a ragtag group of thieves led by Lisa Kudrow in the trailer of Apple TV series Time Bandits, dropped by the streamer on Tuesday.

The two-minute-37-second-long trailer introduces a young boy named Kevin, who struggles with loneliness and is never chosen by his classmates for any school events. To find an escape, he pores over history books and lives vicariously through the Vikings and the Greeks. One night, while he paints figurines of Greek warriors in his room, Kevin hears a thud from his wardrobe. When he opens it, he is led through the coats and shirts, in a similar fashion to CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, into a sandy shore where a Viking war is being fought.

Kevin soon finds out that his wardrobe is a time portal that helps a band of thieves, led by Kudrow’s Penelope, to carry out their heists. Thus, he embarks on a high-stakes adventure with the thieves as they jump from one era to another to steal historical artefacts such as the Trojan Horse and the gold reserves of Mansa Musa.

Towards the end of the trailer, we see Kevin and the thieves travelling to ancient Greece and encountering an enraged Poseidon. It also shows an evil emperor and his minions targeting Kevin’s parents after they get a hint of the map that the Time Bandits use for their heists.

The video ends on a hilarious note, with the bandits leaving Kevin in the Ice Age, telling him that a pair of cave-dwellers are his parents.

The series will appeal to fans of Woody Allen’s 2011 film Midnight in Paris, which featured Owen Wilson’s struggling writer travelling to different literary periods and finding inspiration for his work.

Time Bandits is a reimagining of the 1981 film of the same name, which starred Sean Connery, John Cleese and Michael Palin.

Also starring Sarah Darkin, Tadhg Murphy and Rune Temte, Time Bandits is slated to hit Apple TV on July 24. Some of the episodes of the series are written and directed by Thor: Love and Thunder helmer Taika Waititi, who also features in the trailer.
