Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to open 81st Venice International Film Festival

The follow-up to Burton’s 1988 comedy-horror classic, featuring Michael Keaton in the titular role, will be screened out of competition on August 28

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will kick off this year’s Venice Film Festival, the festival organisers announced on Tuesday.

The follow-up to Burton’s 1988 comedy-horror classic will be screened out of competition on August 28 at the Sala Grande in the Palazzo del Cinema (Lido di Venezia).

Following its Venice debut, the Warner Bros. Pictures film will be released exclusively in theatres in North America on September 6, with international releases starting on September 4.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks the return of Michael Keaton in the titular role,alongside Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and Jenna Ortega, who previously collaborated with Burton on the hit Netflix series Wednesday.

“The Venice Biennale is honoured and proud to host the world premiere of a work that features a surprising swing of creative imagination and driving hallucinatory rhythm,” said festival director Alberto Barbera about the film’s screening at Venice Film Festival.

Tim Burton, too, shared his enthusiasm about his film’s world premiere at the prestigious festival. “I’m very excited by this. It means a lot to me to have the world premiere of this film at the Venice Film Festival.”

The 81st Venice International Film Festival will run from August 28 to September 7, with French actress Isabelle Huppert leading the main competition jury.
