Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, continues to be one of the top 10 shows on Netflix, even a month after its release. The Umbrella siblings are faced with another apocalypse — a common reference in the series — after failing to avert the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Season 2 of the sci-fi drama. While they are challenged to avert new apocalyptic situations in Season 3, new superpowered siblings — The Sparrow Academy — make their entry in the show as new mysteries unfold.

Here we take a look at some of the highlights of Season 3 of the action-packed superhero show that has many striking revelations on offer.

Weaving Ellen Page’s transition to Elliot Page into the plot

The first two seasons established Vanya (Elliot Page, who was Ellen Page back then) as a primary character and threat on the show. When the Inception actor came out as a trans man in December 2020, it became unclear how the show would incorporate his gender transition. But the showmakers proved to be extremely capable of handling the transition. They kept Page as Vanya in the first episode before tactfully transforming him into Viktor in Episode 2. Through the reaction of Viktor’s siblings, the show set an example of how to offer support and acceptance.

One of the deeply impactful moments was when Luther (Tom Hopper) wanted to throw a party for Viktor to make him feel loved. But, Diego (David Castaneda) made Viktor know that he was loved simply by asking him if he felt loved by his siblings. It showed that acceptance does not need to be in the form of overt gestures.

The Founder is revealed

The secretive and controlling Commission played a problematic role in Five’s (Aidan Gallagher) life. He and Lila (Ritu Arya) embarked on a mission to find the Founder of the Commission in hopes of finding a way to stop this season’s apocalypse. What the duo discovers is a one-armed, old man hooked to a life-support machine. Five recognises the dying man to be an older version of himself. Thus, the Founder of the Commission that Five hated so much turned out to be his future self.

Sibling dance battle

The Umbrella siblings’ encounter with Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) in Season 2 changed their future. He deemed the Umbrella siblings incompetent and chose seven other children for The Sparrow Academy. When the Umbrella siblings went home, they discovered the more regimented and brutal set of siblings. The two sets of adopted Hargreeves children have an interesting battle sequence.

The Umbrella siblings appear to engage in a dance battle against the Sparrow siblings, set to Kenny Loggins’ song Footloose. It turned out to be Diego hallucinating after getting Jayme’s (Cazzie David) hallucinogenic venom spat on him. Both the dance battle and the real fight that followed were well orchestrated.

Klaus’ real powers

The ever-tormented Klaus (Robert Sheehan) thought that he had the power to communicate with the dead and make them corporeal for short spans of time. However, this season revealed Klaus to be much more powerful than he thought. What his father had kept from him was discovered when Diego’s fake son Stan (Javon Walton) accidentally shot and killed him with a harpoon gun. Klaus discovered that he had the power of resurrection. With the help of Reginald, Klaus mastered his resurrection powers which proved to be helpful when escaping the apocalypse.

Sloane and Luther’s wedding

The Umbrella Academy is not only about apocalypses but also about hope and love. We have seen several romantic pairings — Diego and Lila, Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Agnes (Sheila McCarthy), Viktor/Vanya and Sissy (Marin Ireland), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) and Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood), and Five and Dolores. However, none of these pairings had the simplistic and innocent love shared by Luther and Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez).

Luther falls in love with the Sparrow sibling and they end up having a pre-apocalypse wedding as the world crumbles around them.

Despite Allison’s attempt at making Luther want her instead of Sloane and continuing to have a conflict with Viktor during the wedding, the couple had a quirky ceremony. The lovers may have been forced apart by the end of the season, but their wedding will remain a memorable one.
