A moment from Babli

Raj Chakraborty’s upcoming film Babli has been making the right noises ever since its teaser was dropped in April. The three splendid songs from its soundtrack have also established that it will be an old-fashioned rom-com, sprinkled with generous dollops of humour, emotions, and surprises. The official trailer of Babli confirmed once more that it will be a love story that will warm the cockles of the heart.

Based on a popular novel by noted Bengali author Buddhadeb Guha, Babli is about the evolution of a romantic relationship between Abhirup Sen, a smart, handsome young man and Babli, a sweet-tempered young lady who thinks she is unattractive because she is plump. The trailer focuses on the ups and downs in the relationship between the lead pair, played by Abir Chatterjee and Subhashree Ganguly, who share an electrifying chemistry. It shows the blossoming of their love affair amidst the pure and picturesque landscape of the hills of the Northeast, offering enticing glimpses of the breathtaking beauty of the natural surroundings. A thrilling romantic rendezvous at a charming spot deep inside a forest is also implied between the two lovers. The scenery of the lush, mountainous landscape between Imphal and Dimapur, the route through which Abhi drives to drop Babli off to her destination, adds to the romance of the atmosphere.

Besides offering hints of their short-lived intimacy and the painful parting of the young lovers, the trailer also highlights the possibility of a triangular love affair. Jhuma (Sauraseni Maitra), Babli’s childhood friend who is now an attractive air hostess, is also shown to be madly in love with Abhi. Babli’s jealousy after she learns that Abhi and Jhuma know each other well, is considered to be the reason for the fallout between him and Babli.

Composed of an interesting collage of key moments from the film, which introduces the pivotal characters and the various aspects of their personalities, the trailer holds the audiences’ interest with its perfect blend of romance, happiness, sorrows, misunderstandings and last but not least, by creating the perfect ambience for the love story it seeks to narrate by portraying the overwhelming natural beauty of its setting. The two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer is left open-ended and does not give away any clues as to its ending.
