The Super Mario Bros. Movie, based on the popular video game by Nintendo, has joined the billion dollar club by grossing USD 1.022 billion at the worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

Produced by Universal, Illumination and Nintendo, it is the first animated film to earn a billion dollars since Frozen 2 in 2019. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has also emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2023 so far.

The film registered a stupendous opening at the worldwide box office with a collection of USD 377 million during its first extended weekend. It also dislodged Frozen 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film in terms of opening weekend collection.

The film has grossed USD 490 million in the US and Canada, and added another USD 530 million from the international market, taking its total collection to USD 1.022 billion.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the 11th animated film and the 52nd film of all time to join the billion dollar club. It is Illumination's third animated movie to achieve this feat, after Despicable Me 3 ( USD 1.034 billion) and Minions (USD 1.159 billion).

The film has also emerged as the highest-grossing video game movie, beating 2016 action fantasy film Warcraft (USD 439 million).

Helmed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Chris Pratt’s voice as the protagonist Mario, an Italian plumber from Brooklyn who gets transported to the Magical Kingdom and teams up with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) to save his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) from the evil conqueror Bowser (Jack Black).
