Netflix has dropped a teaser for anime series The Summer Hikaru Died, promising an uncanny mix of slice-of-life drama and horror.
The one-minute-four-second-long teaser offers a glimpse of the eerie world of highschoolers Yoshiki and Hikaru, who have been inseparable since childhood. But when Hikaru returns from his trip to the mountains, he doesn’t quite seem like himself. Something has taken over Hikaru’s body.
In the video, Hikaru asks Yoshiki about his plans after graduation in a cheerful voice. While Hikaru says that he might look after his grandfather’s shiitake farm after graduating, Yoshiki mentions that he is not sure about his ambitions yet in an uninterested voice.
Despite Hikaru’s lively attitude, Yoshiki seems to be concerned about something. In the next scene, we see him confronting Hikaru, saying that he is not the same person Hikaru has known since childhood.
An eerie music plays while Hikaru hugs Yoshiki, begging the latter to not reveal his secret to anyone. The teaser concludes with Yoshiki fearing his best friend and gasping for breath.
Directed by Ryohei Takeshita, known for Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, the anime is adapted from a hit manga by Mokumokuren. It is produced by CygamesPictures.
“I'm thrilled to voice Yoshiki. From the audition, I felt a whirlwind of emotions — fear, comfort, and uncertainty. My goal was to capture all of Yoshiki’s feelings and melancholy,” Chiaki Kobayashi, who has voiced Yoshiki, said in a statement.
Shuichiro Umeda, who has lent her voice to Hikaru, expressed his excitement over playing a different character. “Playing Hikaru was like peering into darkness. Despite uncertainties, my desire to stay connected with Yoshiki was clear, and I approached the role with that strong feeling,” he said.
The release date of the anime series is yet to be announced.
