Kerry Washington’s Major Charity Adams leads the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — the first and only all-female, all-black women’s army corps during World War II — to deliver over 17 million letters from US soldiers to their loved ones back home in the trailer of The Six Triple Eight.
Dropped by Netflix on Monday, the two-minute-36-second-long trailer shows Adams’ determination and indomitable spirit while leading a troop of women of colour stationed in Europe during World War II. It begins with a scene showing Adams introducing herself and welcoming soldiers into the Women’s Army Corps.
In the next scene, an army general expresses his concerns to the US President about letters from soldiers abroad that fail to get delivered due to incomplete addresses or wrong labels. During the discussion, Oprah Winfrey’s character points out that the male-dominated army has tried out every means, including a white women’s battalion, but they are yet to consider an army of women of colour.
Thus, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion gets formed under the supervision of Adams, who leads 855 women to carry out the Herculean task. Despite facing sexism and segregation within the army, the women of the battalion march on with courage and determination.
The women took on the assignment in dilapidated buildings which lacked light and heat. They were given six months to complete the task. However, they finished it in 90 days, providing a beacon of hope to the army soldiers and their families.
The history of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion often goes untold in history classes. According to Netflix’s blog, when producer Nicole Avant was growing up, the heroic feats of the women-led battalion weren't taught in school.
“I first heard about the 6888th Battalion when I was a young girl,” Avant said in a statement. “My mom told me about Major Charity Adams, but I didn’t know the full story,” she added.
Avant was approached by producer Carlota Espinosa when she secured the rights to Kevin M. Hymel’s 2019 WWII History Magazine article Fighting a Two-Front War. In collaboration with producer Keri Selig, Peter Guber and Mandalay Entertainment, Espinosa developed a sizzle reel to show Avant, who immediately came on board, Netflix wrote on their blog.
Directed by Tyler Perry, The Six Triple Eight is slated to premiere on Netflix on December 20.
