Born on July 7, 1949, in Fort Worth, Texas, Duvall was cast by Robert Altman in his 1970 dark comedy Brewster McCloud, marking the beginning of her illustrious career. She captivated audiences with her performance in Nashville (1975) and went on to portray a variety of memorable characters, earning accolades such as the best actress award at Cannes for her role in the 1977 drama 3 Women.

Duvall’s most notable role came in 1980 when she starred alongside Jack Nicholson in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining. She also made a brief appearance in Woody Allen’s 1977 film Annie Hall and starred opposite Robin Williams in Altman’s 1980 live-action film Popeye.

During the latter part of the 1980s, Duvall ventured into children’s programmes. After a two-decade hiatus from professional acting, the actress returned to the big screen in the 2023 independent horror-thriller The Forest Hills, which now marks her final film appearance.
