According to the US entertainment magazine Deadline, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav shared during an investor conference call that the project is “now in the early stages of script development”. He also affirmed that Jackson, alongside co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, “will be involved every step of the way”.

Expressing their enthusiasm for the project, Jackson, Walsh and Boyens said in a statement, “It is both a privilege and a thrill to journey back to Middle-earth alongside our esteemed colleague and friend, Andy Serkis, who shares a personal vendetta with that infamous creature – Gollum!”

Taking to Facebook, Andy Serkis posted a ‘selfie’ with Gollum with the caption, “We is baaaack, Precious!”

Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video is gearing up for the second season of its fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay. Inspired by Tolkien's Middle-earth lore, the series draws primarily from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings novel, set thousands of years before the events of the book. Amazon Studios collaborates with New Line Cinema in bringing this epic tale of Middle-earth’s Second Age to life.
