Tanya Reynolds, Amar Chadha-Patel and Lou Gala play a group of posh Florentines who indulge in wine and carnal fantasies while quarantined in a lavish villa during a plague outbreak in the trailer of Netflix’s upcoming dark comedy series The Decameron, based on Giovanni Boccaccio's classic renaissance short story collection.
The one-minute-53-second-long trailer, dropped by the makers on Wednesday, begins with the nobles journeying to an Italian countryside in 1348 to wait out the plague ravaging Florence. They isolate themselves inside a luxurious villa, but their seclusion takes a wild and chaotic turn as passion and intoxication override societal norms. Reynolds’ character appears covered in fish carnage, while Patel’s and Gala’s engage in a steamy, ‘sinful’ romance.
Karan Gill warns Reynolds about the crumbling 'laws of civility', amidst scenes blending gore, violence and eroticism with light-hearted buffoonery to relieve tension. The ensemble cast also includes Leila Farzad, Douggie McMeekin, Jessica Plummer, Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet and Saoirse-Monica Jackson.
The period drama is developed by Teenage Bounty Hunters creator Kathleen Jordan and Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan. Michael Uppendahl of Fargo fame directs four of the eight episodes.
The Decameron, inspired by 14th-century Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio’s eponymous collection of 100 tales, is slated to hit Netflix on July 25.
