With the release date of Raj Chakraborty’s film Shontaan drawing near, SVF Social dropped the music video of Tomar akashey, a song from the upcoming film. A family saga that centres around an elderly couple who take their son to court for his failure to take care of them or to offer any help during a crisis, Shontaan is backed by tremendous star power and boasts an ensemble cast led by Mithun Chakraborty, Ritwick Chakraborty, Shubhasree Ganguly and Anashua Majumder.

Tomar akashey is the second song of the film’s soundtrack to be shared by its makers, the first being a lively Durga Puja number. With lyrics by Anindya Chatterjee and music composed by Jeet Gannguli, the song has been sung by young Bollywood playback singer and composer Vishal Mishra. The diction and delivery by Mishra are near perfect in this debut Bengali song by him, while the classical strains of the song tug at the heartstrings. The song is about the sorrow felt by the parents when a rift tears apart the two generations of the family. It expresses the idea that coping with pain becomes easier when you have a loved one by your side to hold your hand.

The poignant and emotional video focuses on the polarity of the lives of the parents and their son. It depicts the various stages of their lives, touching upon the younger, happier days of the characters played by Mithun Chakraborty and Anashua Majumder. Their story presents a picture of an ideal married couple, who are deeply in love and committed to each other and their family. As the song progresses, the visuals show the parents’ unhappy acceptance of their fate of being separated from their son.

The visuals also offer a collage of remembrances of happy moments from the past, when their son and his family were a part of their daily lives. It also shows unpleasant and shocking moments of conflict where the daughter-in-law lashes out verbally at her mother-in-law and Ritwick’s character pushes aside his father so roughly that he loses balance.

Two and half minutes long, the melodious number saddens the heart but at the same time makes listeners aware of the vicissitudes of fortune that occur in every human life. The song also offers an assurance that dealing with difficulties with fortitude will help one tide over their problems. In fact the ending visual of the song gives a tiny hint that all may turn out well for the elderly couple, and that the family may be reunited again.
