Lucasfilm has decided not to move forward with a second season of The Acolyte, the Star Wars spinoff starring Amandla Stenberg, according to American entertainment website Deadline.
The decision comes over a month after the eight-episode first season, created and helmed by Leslye Headland, concluded on Disney+.
The Acolyte was set approximately 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Stenberg portrayed twin sisters Osha and Mae, who were separated during childhood. Osha trained as a Padawan under a respected Jedi Master, while Mae was aligned with the Dark Side.
The series also featured performances by Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dean-Charles Chapman and Joonas Suotamo.
The show left viewers with intriguing storylines and even hinted at the return of the beloved character Yoda. The season ended with several unresolved mysteries, particularly surrounding the true nature of The Acolyte and the deeper conspiracy within the Jedi Order. These plot points were intended to be explored in the second season, but they now remain open-ended due to the series’ cancellation.
The Acolyte made a strong debut on June 4, launching with two episodes that racked up 4.8 million views on its first day, making it Disney+’s biggest series premiere of the year. The series accumulated 11.1 million views worldwide within five days of streaming. It entered Nielsen’s Top 10 originals chart at No. 7 during its premiere week (with 488 million minutes viewed) and climbed to No. 6 the following week.
Despite its initial momentum, The Acolyte could not maintain its standing, dropping out of the Top 10 in its third week. It briefly returned to the list at No. 10 following the release of its finale, which recorded 335 million minutes viewed.
