Thalapathy Vijay’s Virasu has trumped Ajith Kumar-starrer Thunivu at the box office over the Pongal weekend in terms of worldwide collection.

According to trade reports, Varisu grossed Rs 123 crore in India since its release on January 11. Combined with Rs 66 crore gross collection overseas, the worldwide earnings of the comedy drama now stands at Rs 189 crore.

Varisu opened to a worldwide collection of Rs 47.5 crore gross (Rs 20 crore in Tamil Nadu). Apart from doing good business in Tamil Nadu, where the film has raked in Rs 81 crore in six days, the Thalapathy Vijay-Rashmika Mandanna-starrer is having a dream run at the UK box office.

Thunivu started off well and took a lead over the other Pongal releases on opening day in Tamil Nadu. However, the action thriller soon started lagging behind Varisu. On Day One, Thunivu reported earnings worth Rs 41.5 crore gross worldwide (Rs 22.5 crore in Tamil Nadu). The Ajith-starrer has grossed Rs 136 crore worldwide so far — it has earned Rs 91.50 crore gross from India and Rs 44.3 crore gross from the overseas market. A major share of the film’s earnings, Rs 78 crore, are from Tamil Nadu alone.
