Even with the burden of a broken family on his shoulders in his last release Varisu (2023), Thalapathy Vijay was light enough on his feet to match steps with Rashmika Mandanna. The Tamil star is a phenomenal dancer whose sleek moves are celebrated and copied by his fans. On his 49th birthday, we revisit five of Vijay’s iconic dance numbers that have us grooving to this day.

Vaathi Coming - Master (2021)

Vijay's high-energy dance performance in the song Vaathi Coming from the movie Master set the screen on fire. His impeccable moves and charismatic presence breathed life to the dynamic choreography by Dinesh Kumar, making this performance an instant hit. Vijay's infectious energy and impressive footwork made this song composed by Anirudh an anthem for dance lovers.

Aalaporan Thamizhan - Mersal (2017)

A.R. Rahman’s melodic beats in Aalaporan Thamizhan came to life with Vijay’s dancing skills. The choreography by Shobi featured a fusion of various dance styles, including folk and contemporary. The actor’s graceful moves and synchronisation with backup made this dance sequence a visual delight.

Jingunamani - Jilla (2014)

Vijay showcased his versatility as a dancer while performing to the D. Imman composition Jingunamani from Jilla. Choreographed by Sridhar, the musical number featured a mix of modern and folk dance styles and became a big hit thanks to Vijay’s performance. The chemistry between Vijay and Scarlett Mellish Wilson, along with the picturesque backdrop, added to the overall charm of this dance number sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and Ranjith.

Appadi Podu - Ghilli (2004)

Ghilli’s chartbuster song Appadi Podu — composed by Vidyasagar and sung by KK and Anuradha Sriram — is a perennial favourite of fans of Vijay. The actor’s electrifying dance moves and energy in this performance were unmatched. The fast-paced choreography by Raju Sundaram and Vijay's exceptional agility brought a raw and captivating energy to the screen, leaving audiences enthralled.

Aal Thotta Boopathy - Youth (2002)

Thalapathy Vijay’s moves in Aal Thotta Boopathy from Youth is a testament to his youthful charm and incredible dancing abilities. His effortless grace, smooth transitions and ability to convey emotions through dance made this performance a standout. His chemistry with Simran and the catchy choreography by Dinesh Kumar added to the overall appeal. Composed by Mani Sharma, the peppy number has been sung by Shankar Mahadevan.
