Taylor Swift on Tuesday night emerged as The Artist of the Year at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, tying for most wins in one night with an impressive haul of nine awards and registering second-most overall wins.
Held in New Jersey's Prudential Center, the award ceremony saw the 33-year-old pop singer’s recent song Anti-Hero bagging awards in the Best Song, Visual Effects and Best Video of the Year categories. She also received the Album of the Year Award for her 2022 album Midnights. Apart from these, Swift went on to win awards in the Show of the Summer, Best Pop, Best Cinematography and Best Direction categories.
After she entered the night with 14 VMAs as well as 11 nominations, Swift’s latest wins brought her total VMA haul to 24, one more than Madonna and just behind Beyonce’s 26 awards.
After being presented with her Best Pop Award from American boy band NSYNC, Swift thanked fans and called her musical journey “one big adventure”. “I love making pop music,” she said before looking back on her early days when she had been “slinking around different genres”.
MTV took to their Instagram handle to share a picture of Taylor holding all her awards. “This night is sparkling – and so are ALL OF @TAYLORSWIFT’S #VMAs 💎,” it wrote alongside the picture.
Besides Taylor, BTS member Jungkook bagged the Song of the Summer Award for his recently released song Seven in collaboration with American rapper Latto. Korean girl-band BLACKPINK received an award for Best Choreography for the music video of their 2022 song Pink Venom.
American singer Dove Cameron was awarded with the Best Video for Good trophy for her 2022 song Breakfast. The Video for Good Award celebrates artists who use their platform to promote positive changes globally.
Nicki Minaj won the prize of Best Hip-Hop Video for the music video of her 2022 song Super Freaky Girl ,while Italian rock band Måneskin got the Best Rock Video trophy for their 2023 song The Loneliest.
