The third season of Coke Studio Bangla kicked off this weekend with a celebration of the oft-forgotten textile artisans of Bangladesh. The opening song, Tati, led by Coke Studio Bangla’s creative director Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, marks the coming together of weaver Md. Gonjer Ali, Nigerian musician Oli Boy and actress Jaya Ahsan on vocals.
The lyrics of Tati are a fusion of three different songs — Gayer Bodhu written by Md. Gonjer Ali, Hana di Reshomer Bone written by Shatarupa Thakurta Roy, and Time to Giger written by Oli Boy. The song also features rhythmic verses sung by Jamdani weavers, collected by Chandra Shekhar Shaha.
The visual presentation of Tati as well as its words are an ode to Bangladesh’s rich legacy of handloom (taat), specially the Jamdani weave, and captures the toil, care and exquisite craftsmanship that a weaver puts in to produce a sari.
The set for the music video is a riot of colours, done up with a weaver’s accompaniments, like the loom and bunches of threads. The performers are dressed in saris and outfits made of Jamdani and other textiles, and there’s a section on two models walking down the ramp flaunting handloom creations. Thread, a clothing brand owned by Syeda Sadia Afrina specialising in Jamdani, partnered with Coke Studio Bangla for the costumes.
Like its previous seasons, the first song of Coke Studio Bangla Season 3 is a fusion of Bangladeshi folk music and western sounds. The song begins with the sound of the rhythmic movements of handlooms, before moving on to the sarangi and dotara, followed by Oli Boy’s Afrobeats.
Coke Studio Bangla Season 3 will deliver 11 songs, with Pritom Hasan, Emon Chowdhury and Shuvendu Das Shuvo as music producers alongside Arnob.
