Christian Convery’s half-human and half-deer Gus is the only one who can save the world from the apocalypse arising from the H5G9 Virus, commonly known as the Sick, in the trailer of the third and final season of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth.

Dropped by the streamer on Tuesday, the two-minute-44-second-long trailer begins with a shot of Gus aka Sweet Tooth while a voiceover by Adeel Akhtar’s Dr Aditya Singh plays in the background. Dr Singh says that he has figured out the big question prevailing in the post-apocalyptic world.

In subsequent scenes, we learn that Gus is the first hybrid born right before the virus outbreak 10 years back. It then proceeds to show how Gus embarks on a journey to save the world from the apocalypse by travelling to Alaska.

Fan-favourite character Tommy Jepperd, played by Nonso Anozie, argues with Dr Singh about their Alaska plan. “You’re asking him to save the world, he hasn’t even saved him,” he says about Gus before other scenes show hybrids like Wendy (Naledi Murray) and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) planning their mode of action with Jepperd, Gus and Dr Singh.

We also see a new threat in the form of the government official Helen Zhang (Rosalind Chao), who wants to eradicate hybrids. The trailer also shows action-packed scenes, highlighting the fights between the hybrids and the government officials. “Lead the way, Sweet Tooth,” Jepperd tells Gus at the end of the trailer.

Sweet Tooth, which came out in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, is set in a world where a virus outbreak kills a majority of the world’s population, coinciding with the birth of hybrid babies having animalistic features. As the surviving people take precautions against the virus with masks, they become alienated towards the hybrids who they think are the cause behind the apocalypse.

“At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’s story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’s journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be,” showrunner Jim Mickie said in a statement.

The final season of Sweet Tooth will start streaming on Netflix from June 6.
