A sequel to the 1997 Tamil blockbuster Suryavamsam is on the cards, veteran actor R. Sarathkumar announced on Twitter recently.
Taking to the microblogging platform on the 26th anniversary of the superhit film, the Por Thozhil actor hinted that Suryavamsam 2 is currently being developed. “It has been 26 years since the release of Suryavamsam, a special family film that can be celebrated in the artistic journey, time has passed, technology has progressed, and is still in the minds of fans from all walks of life. Thanks to the fans who enjoyed the entire movie like characters, dialogues, songs, made it a huge success and supported it,” the actor wrote.
Sarathkumar concluded his message by teasing the upcoming sequel. “Soon Suryavamsam - 2!...” he wrote.
Directed by Vikraman, Suryavamsam was a cinematic exploration of interpersonal relationships between a father and his son, delving into the detrimental effects of ego and communication barriers on familial bonds. Sarathkumar skillfully portrayed dual roles as the father and the son in the film alongside Raadhika Sarathkumar, Devayani, Priya Raman and Manivannan.
Not only did Suryavamsam achieve enormous success as a major blockbuster in the Tamil industry in 1997, but it also garnered attention in other film industries. It was remade in Telugu (1998) as well as Kannada (2000). The Hindi adaptation — Sooryavansham (1999) — starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role has become a cult classic over the years.
