The Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) on Friday announced the formation of a new committee named Suraksha Bandhu (Safety Buddy) to ensure that female artistes and technicians receive adequate protection at the workplace and also receive support in case of harassment.

The announcement was made by FCTWEI President Swaroop Biswas, who detailed to the press the committee’s role in providing a secure working environment for women.

This decision has come in the wake of allegations of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. Such allegations have come to the fore after the publication of the Justice Hema Committee report.

On Wednesday, a letter advocating for the creation of a women’s safety committee was submitted to top officials of the FCTWEI, Artists’ Forum, Eastern Indian Motion Pictures Association and Telly Academy. This letter, signed by female professionals across all levels of the entertainment industry, prompted the establishment of Suraksha Bandhu.

According to a statement released by the Federation, Suraksha Bandhu will consist of one female member from each guild. Complainants can report issues through an official email, where their grievances will be addressed.

The Federation has already engaged renowned lawyers to handle legal battles on behalf of the complainants. Additionally, if a complainant is financially disadvantaged, the Federation will cover their costs. The committee will also ensure that victims receive medical treatment and psychological support.
