Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 becomes second-biggest opener of 2023, OMG 2 gets a decent start

While Gadar 2 minted Rs 40 crore nett on Friday, OMG 2 raked in Rs 10 crore nett at the box office

Sunny Deol-starrer Gadar 2: The Katha Continues had a thunderous opening at the box office with a collection of Rs 40 crore on its Day 1 in theatres, while Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi’s OMG 2 got off to a decent start, raking in Rs 10 crore on its opening day, trade reports highlighted on Saturday.

Gadar 2, an Anil Sharma-helmed sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, marks the return of Sunny Deol as Tara Singh and Ameesha Patel as Sakeena. OMG 2, on the other hand, is an Amit Rai-directed follow-up to the 2012 film OMG — Oh My God starring Paresh Rawal and Akshay.

According to trade reports, Gadar 2 has emerged as the second-highest grossing Hindi opener of 2023 while OMG 2 occupied the eighth position on the list.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan (Rs 57 crore nett) still tops the 2023 charts while Prabhas-starrer Adipurush occupies the third spot with a collection of Rs 37 crore nett (in Hindi). Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (Rs 15.81 crore nett) was at the fourth position, followed by Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar (Rs 15.73 crore), Ranveer Singh-Alia Bhatt’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rs 11.1 crore nett) and Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa (Rs 10.5 crore nett).

Meanwhile, Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which began its third week in cinemas, managed to earn around Rs 1.79 crore nett on Day 15, taking its total collection so far to Rs 122.53 crore nett.

Gadar 2 is set 17 years after the events of the first film. This time, Tara Singh is on a mission to rescue his son Jeete, who has been captured by a Pakistani military official Hamid Iqbal (Manish Wadhwa).

OMG 2, which also features Yami Gautam and Arun Govil in pivotal roles, stars Akshay as a 'messenger of Shiva' who has been sent to earth to aid Kanti Sharan Mudgal (Pankaj Tripathi) in his fight for justice for his son. Yami Gautam takes on the role of a lawyer and engages in a legal clash with Kanti during the trial.
