Director Suman Ghosh's film The Scavenger of Dreams has been selected as the closing night film of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Summer Festival), the film’s leading actress Sudipta Chakraborty shared on Wednesday.

“Hurrah!! Our film “The Scavenger of Dreams” has been selected as the Closing Night Film of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Summer Festival), marking its third festival selection following its World premiere at Busan and Asian premiere at MAMI (Mumbai Film Festival). ,” the National Award-winning actress wrote on Facebook.

The Scavenger of Dreams will be screened on March 2 at 6pm AEST at HOYTS district, Docklands in Melbourne. It revolves around Birju (Shardul Bhardwaj) and Shona (Sudipta Chakraborty), a Dalit couple residing in a slum in Kolkata with their daughter, and chronicles their experiences.

After having its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in October 2023, The Scavenger of Dreams had its India premiere at the JIO MAMI Film Festival in Mumbai in November.

During the screening of the film at MAMI, Ghosh had revealed that the idea for The Scavenger of Dreams was inspired by an article published in The New York Times. “It had an interesting headline: ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ It was about a waste collector in California who used to collect waste from the billionaires there… old iPads or phones and things like that. Sometimes he did not even know the use of those things. But he used to collect them and dream about the lives that the rich people had,” he had said.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Summer Festival) will be held from February 29 to March 2. Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies will open the festival.
