Suman Ghosh’s latest film Puratawn, which marks Sharmila Tagore’s return to Bengali cinema, is set to have its India premiere at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 on October 21, the filmmaker said on Thursday.
Puratawn had its world premiere at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival in September, where it won the award for best film and best actress for Sharmila Tagore.
“Our cast and crew will be present at the screening,” Ghosh wrote on Facebook.
In Puratawn, Sharmila Tagore plays a matriarch grappling with the challenges of ageing. The narrative unfolds during her 80th birthday, celebrated by her daughter (played by Rituparna Sengupta) and son-in-law (Indraneil Sengupta) at their ancestral home. Over the course of a week, the family reunion becomes the heart of the story, delving into the intricacies of their relationships.
The film is produced by Rituparna Sengupta's production company Bhavna Aaj O Kal.
Ravi Kiran Ayyagari serves as the director of photography for Puratawn with Angelica Monica Bhowmick as associate director. Esteemed filmmaker Aditya Vikram Sengupta serves as the editor, with sound design by Dipankar Jojo Chaki and music by Alokananda Dasgupta.
Tanmoy Chakraborty, who collaborated with Ghosh on Kabuliwala, leads the production design.
Ghosh is a familiar name on the international festival circuit. In 2023, his film Scavenger of Dreams premiered at the Busan International Film Festival, and his 2024 documentary Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival. He also found commercial success with Kabuliwala, a hit in India during the 2023 Christmas season.
Sharmila Tagore's recent work includes the 2023 Disney+ Hotstar original Gulmohar. Rituparna Sengupta’s latest film was Ajogyo by Kaushik Ganguly, marking her 50th collaboration with actor Prosenjit Chatterjee.
