Filmmaker Suman Ghosh’s latest documentary, Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen, will have its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands in January 2024, the filmmaker announced on social media on Tuesday.
Ghosh said the film on the acclaimed director-actor was special for him for several reasons. “First of all, the joy to make a film on someone whom I deeply love and respect. Both as a person and a filmmaker. Such a person is rare in today's world. Hence I wanted to explore her and delve into her world,” he wrote on Instagram.
The filmmaker said it would be the first time for him to take one of his movies to the prestigious Dutch film festival. “In my 15 years of cinematic journey, I have never been able to crack Rotterdam. I have been to many other top film festivals - but always thought Rotterdam is a tough nut to crack. The main satisfaction of entering such a top film festival is that I might have been able to make something which might be universal. That is how I see my subject,” he mentioned.
Though Ghosh had earlier directed Sen in his 2019 film Basu Paribar, which also featured the late Soumitra Chatterjee, the journey of creating Parama: A Journey was not easy for him. “I had to shun my interactions with Rina di…I wanted to maintain the objectivity. I so love the long addas with Rina di and Kalyan da at their place. Anyways, my self imposed embargo is over and now I can be back to her,” he stated.
Suman Ghosh’s latest directorial feature Kabuliwala is headlined by Mithun Chakraborty. Adapted from a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, the movie slated to hit cinemas on December 22.
