Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is being mocked by Hollywood writers amidst the ongoing Writers’ Guild of America strike following her controversial claims about having to rewrite her lines on the Netflix comedy horror series.
Franklin & Bash writer Nick Adams criticised Ortega on Twitter in a direct response to the actress’s comments on an episode of the Armchair Expert Podcast where she talked about changing lines for her character on Wednesday. “Jenna Ortega better be back from NY for her afternoon shift on the picket line,” he wrote.
The tweet was later retweeted by The Bear writer Karen Joseph Adock. “Rewriting is writing! See you at the line, Jenna! ,🖤” she wrote alongside it.
Immediately after the writers’ responses to Ortega’s comments, Twitteratis came to the defence of the actress and called out the writers for using her as a scapegoat for the ongoing issues surrounding the strike. Ortega, however, is yet to respond to any of the tweets levelled against her.
Earlier, Ortega had severely criticised the original writing of her Netflix hit show in the podcast and claimed to have changed her lines. “I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set in the way that I had to on Wednesday. Everything that she does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle made no sense. There was a line about a dress that she has to wear for a school dance and she said, ‘Oh my God, I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that, I literally hate myself.’ And I had to go, ‘No,'” she had revealed halfway through the podcast.
“There were times on that set where I almost became unprofessional in a sense, where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought that I was like, going with something, and then I would have to sit down with the writers and they would be like, ‘Wait, what happened to this scene?’ And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn’t do certain things,” she had claimed.
The 20-year-old will be seen next in the second season of Wednesday as well as the upcoming Tim Burton directorial Beetlejuice 2 (2024).
The Hollywood writers went on a strike from May 2 due to an ongoing labour dispute between the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) labour union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Several Hollywood celebrities, including Pete Davidson, Jane Fonda, Jason Sudeikis and Jay Leno, have since joined forces with the protesting writers.
India’s Screenwriters Association (SWA) also came out in support of the WGA recently and requested its members to stop working on US-based films and web series to show solidarity.
