Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Stree 2 has emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time at the domestic box office, production house Maddock Films announced on Wednesday.
The Amar Kaushik-helmed horror drama, which trumped Ranbir Kapoor’s 2023 blockbuster Animal in India on Monday, was short of the lifetime collection of the Hindi version of Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan a day before the announcement was made.
“Woh Stree hai aur usne aakhir kar dikhaya... Hindustan ki sab se sarvashresth No. 1 Hindi film of all time!!! Yeh itihaas humare saath rachane ke liye sab fans ko bahut bahut dhanyavaad...Stree 2 is still running in cinemas successfully... theatre aao, kuch aur naye records rachate hain,” Maddock Films wrote on Instagram.
After its fifth Monday in theatres, Stree 2 beat Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, earning Rs 583.35 crore nett against the latter’s lifetime collection of Rs 553.87 crore nett, according to industry data-tracking platform Sacnilk.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 is a sequel to the 2018 horror comedy Stree and also stars Aparshakti Khurrana, Abhishek Banerjee and Pankaj Tripathi. Animal, released in 2023, was directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starred Rashmika Mandanna opposite Ranbir.
Stree 2 kicked off its box office run on August 15, earning Rs 64.8 crore nett on its opening day. It earned Rs 307.8 crore nett during its first week, followed by Rs 145.8 crore nett in the second week. In its third week, the Amar Kaushik directorial added Rs 72.83 crore nett to its tally. In Week 4, Stree 2 earned Rs 37.6 crore nett.
As per Sacnilk, Jawan's nett collection in India across all languages is ₹640.25 crore. In Hindi, its lifetime collection in India is ₹582.31 crore nett.
Directed by Atlee and produced under Shah Rukh Khan’s home banner Red Chillies Entertainment, Jawan stars Shah Rukh in a dual role as a father and son who team up to combat corruption in society. The film features Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra in supporting roles. Released theatrically on 7 September 2023, Jawan became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2023, earning Rs 1,160 crore net worldwide, according to IMDb.
