South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun returns to play the dystopian survival games all over again — but this time to put an end to the madness and save lives — in the official trailer of Squid Game Season 2, dropped by Netflix on Tuesday.

The one-minute-35-second trailer features Gi-hun in a car, supposedly when he was abducted. When the head staff of the game, Front Man (Hwang In-ho), played by Lee Byung-hun, asks Gi-hun what he wants from him, the latter replies, “Put me back in the game.”

Gi-hun returns to the game to save hundreds of new contestants who must play a series of children’s games popular in Korea to win USD 4.56 million. However, those who fail to complete the tasks are instantly killed.

Sharing the trailer on X, Netflix wrote, “Number 456, welcome back to the game. Unstoppable mind game is on again. Season 2, released on December 26.”

The trailer also shows Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun), who was Front Man’s brother in the first season, returning to continue his investigation. In Season 1, Jun-ho comes close to exposing the horrors of the game.

The makers also posted a new poster of the Squid Game Season 2, which features Gi-hun leading a group of other contestants running away from a merry-go-round. The poster carries the text ‘Let The New Games Begin’.

Apart from Lee Jung-jae, the second season is set to see Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun and Gon Yoo reprising their roles. Other actors who will join the new season include Yim Si-wan. Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun and Kang Ae-sim.

Hwang Dong-hyuk returns as writer, director and executive producer for the upcoming season, while Chae Kyoung-sun serves as the production designer.

Squid Game Season 1 introduced viewers to K-drama’s deadly game, where citizens were forced to gamble their lives. It went on to become Netflix’s most-watched series, with a record 1.65 billion views in just 28 days after its September 17, 2021 release. Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian man to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the 2022 Emmys and the first to win for a non-English show. Hwang Dong-hyuk also became the first Asian to win an Emmy for directing a drama series.

Squid Game Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26.
