Rachel Zegler lends her voice to Princess Ellian who embarks on a magical journey to lift a curse that has turned her parents into monsters in the teaser of Netflix’s animated film Spellbound.
Dropped by the streamer on Tuesday, the two-minute-48-second-long teaser begins with Ellian recalling the night her parents — voiced by Javier Bardem and Nicole Kidman — took a stroll into the Dark Forest and returned to the Royal Palace as monsters.
Set to a peppy track, the video is filled with scenes showing Ellian’s teenage angst and her parents exhibiting monstrous attributes. However, when the kingdom’s soldiers take up arms to fight the monsters, Ellian takes pains to inform them that the monsters are actually the king and the queen, making for heartrending moments.
After the authorities lock up the monsters, Ellian goes on a thrilling quest to prevent them from being sent to the far reaches of the world. Adding to her misery is the fact that her parents will remain monsters forever if time runs out.
Touted as an “original fairy tale take on a modern story”, Spellbound boasts an ensemble voice cast that also includes John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane and Tituss Burgess.
Directed by Shrek helmer Vicky Jenson, Spellbound is animated by Skydance Animation. “If we start with the familiar — the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell — we could use that to express the story of this family,” Jenson said in a statement, explaining how Spellbound is a “human story” under the veneer of magic and mayhem.
“For me, the story is even more universal than the specifics of this family dynamic. For me, it speaks to kids and their parents, to the kind of alienation that can happen as we grow up, and the steps we have to make toward each other to weather it together and come through the other side with better understanding,” he added.
Spellbound is slated to hit Netflix on November 22.
