Actor Sohum Shah on Saturday announced a sequel to his 2018 folk horror movie Tumbbad, dropping a teaser on social media.

The 46-second-long clip begins with a shot of the main characters, Vinayak Rao (Sohum) and his son Pandurang (Mohammad Samad). “Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega… darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega (Time is a circle, what has passed will return... the door will open once more.),” Sohum says in a voiceover.

The teaser ends with ominous words, “Pralay, pralay phir aayega (Doom, doom will strike again),” hinting at a looming disaster in the upcoming film.

“#TUMBBAD2. Pralay Aayega. #AdeshPrasad #AnkitJain #AmitaShah #MukeshShah,” reads the caption of the video on X.

Tumbbad 2 was announced by the makers at the end of the film’s re-run in theatres on Friday. Videos and screenshots circulating on social media show fans erupting with excitement about the reveal inside the hall.

The first film, which came out in 2018, follows Vinayak Rao, a man obsessed with finding a hidden fortune in the village of Tumbbad, believed to be protected by the demon Hastar. As Vinayak becomes consumed by his quest, he discovers that the treasure comes at a horrifying cost, leading him down a path of moral decay and ruin.

Due to its niche plot, Tumbbad failed to do well at the box office when it came out in 2018. However, it has garnered a cult following over the years for its unique narrative, visual style and its fusion of mythology with horror.

After its re-release in theatres on Friday, the film surpassed its original box office collection and garnered an opening of around Rs 1.50 crore nett in India.

Also starring Jyoti Malshe, Dhundiraj Prabhakar, Ronjini Chakraborty and Harish Khanna, Tumbbad is directed by Rahi Anil Barve. It is produced by Sohum, Aanand L. Rai, Mukesh Shah and Amita Shah.

Tumbbad became the first Indian film to screen at the critics’ week section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival.
