The Big Cigar
The meeting of famed movie producer Bert Schneider (Easy Rider) and the Black Panther Party leader Huey P. Newton is of historic significance. Their partnership is at the heart of the new limited series The Big Cigar, premiering May 17. It’s about how Newton (played by Andre Holland) fled to Cuba in 1974 after he was arrested and charged with the murder of a prostitute (a crime he claimed he didn’t commit). Schneider (Alessandro Nivola) helped with cash and logistical assistance, involving a fake movie production. The limited series runs through June 14.

The British comedy Trying has come a long way since the adoption phase. Season four once again brings together Esther Smith and Rafe Spall. The show moves forward six years, discovering that Nikki (Smith) and Jason (Spall) are experienced adopters having built a lovely little nuclear family, enriched by an extraordinary support network. However, as their teenage daughter, Princess (Rayner), starts to yearn for a connection with her birth mother, Nikki and Jason find themselves confronted with the ultimate test of their parenting skills. Starting May 22, the show will continue through July 3.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a high-powered lawyer (Rusty) who’s cheating on his wife (played by Ruth Negga) in the first trailer for David E. Kelley’s TV adaptation of Presumed Innocent. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together. The eight-episode limited series also has as executive producer J.J. Abrams and is based on The New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow. Global debut takes place on June 12 and it runs through July 24.

Taranom seeks refuge in Pakistan. The Cannes Golden Eye nominee reveals the powerful resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban. The film is produced by Excellent Cadaver’s Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi, alongside Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights advocate and executive producer Malala Yousafzai’s Extracurricular and renowned director Sahra Mani. The feature documentary will premiere globally on June 21.

Isabel Deroy-Olson and Lily Gladstone star in Fancy Dance
Starring Lily Gladstone, the film marks the feature directorial debut for Erica Tremblay. Since her sister’s disappearance, Jax (Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. Global debut is on June 28.
