Producer Siddharth Roy Kapur shared how the comedy drama Tumse Na Ho Payega came to be as a result of a chance encounter.
Co-produced by Siddharth, Ronnie Screwvala, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari, Tumse Na Ho Payega is an adaptation of Varun Agarwal’s 2012 book How I Braved Anu Aunty and Co-Founded a Million Dollar Company.
In a post shared on the Roy Kapur Films’ social media handles, Siddharth described how the film made it from the pages to the screen. “I bumped into Varun Agarwal - literally! - as I was leaving the stage after a talk at IIM-Lucknow, and he was walking onto the stage as the next speaker,” he wrote.
Varun handed the Rocket Boys producer a copy of his book to read on his flight back to Mumbai. Siddharth shared that he had broken into ‘raucous laughter’ while he was reading the book.
At the time, Siddharth was working with director Nitesh Tiwari on Dangal. After having read the book, the duo decided to turn it into a movie and proceeded to acquire the rights.
Nitesh and Chhichhore writer Nikhil Mehrotra created the screenplay adaptation. “RSVP loved the book just as much as we did and came on board; and Star Studios and Disney Hotstar backed it to the hilt and gave it the platform it has today. Nitesh and Ashwiny’s idea to hand the directorial reins to Abhishek Sinha was a genius move because Abhishek brilliantly brought together his young and enthusiastic cast and crew to give the film an energy and verve that is just so unique and refreshing!” Siddharth wrote in her post.
Tumse Na Ho Payega has an ensemble cast of Ishwak Singh, Mahima Makwana, Gaurav Pandey, Amala Akkineni, Gurpreet Saini, Parmeet Sethi and Meghna Malik.
Stating how happy he was to have bumped into Varun, the producer wrote, “This is a story that I think everyone who has been in an unfulfilling job, with dreams of doing something of their own, will relate to. Anyone who has ever been told by naysayers — ‘tumse na ho payega’ — will laugh and cry with our protagonists as they make their way from frustration to fulfilment.”
Backed by RSVP Movies, Roy Kapur Films, Star Studios and Earthsky Pictures, the film is available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar.
