After portraying Feluda, Byomkesh and Sonada on the big screen, Abir Chatterjee plays yet another sleuth — this time, slightly off the beaten track — who hunts down an arch-nemesis and banters with his own creator in the metanarrative- smacking teaser of Hoichoi Studios’s Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole.

Dropped on Sunday by the makers, the two-minute-long teaser offers a glimpse into the action-packed world of Dipak Chatterjee. Clad in a grey overcoat and a hat, this gun-toting detective moves up and down the fog-smeared lanes and bylanes of a city in search of international terrorist Badami Hyena. In a meta plot twist, Dipak’s creator Swapankumar (portrayed by Paran Bandopadhyay) himself brings his super sleuth out of retirement.

Swapankumar and Dipak exchange banter as the latter ruefully asks his creator why he has made him a laughing stock to the world, mentioning probably the most famous line from the pulp fiction series, “Amar dui haate duto bonduk aar ek haate ekta torch.’’ Past conflicts forgotten, they soon join hands with Dipak’s sidekick Ratanlal, portrayed by Pratik Dutta, and Tashi, played by Shruti Das, to take on the adversary.

When a woman tells Dipak Chatterjee that she still watches Bengali films, the detective comes up with a wry reply, “Do not expect me to stand by Bengali cinema”, alluding to the now-turned-into-a-meme appeal by Bengali filmmakers to support their craft. A funky touch to Rabindranath Tagore’s song Phoole Phoole Dhole Dhole adds to the atmosphere of the suspense-filled world.

Directed by Debaloy Bhattacharya, who had earlier helmed the web series Indubala Bhaater Hotel for Hoichoi, the teaser promises a gripping adventure filled with suspense, action and mystery. Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole is Debaloy’s fourth feature film as a director. He had earlier helmed Roga Howar Sohoj Upay (2015), Biday Byomkesh (2018) and Dracula Sir (2020).
