DreamWorks Animation has confirmed that Shrek 5 is in the works with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles for the new instalment that will arrive in the theatres on July 1, 2026.
“Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz,” the makers wrote on the X official handle of the animation studio, sharing an 11-second announcement teaser.
According to American entertainment magazine Variety, Shrek 5 will be directed by Walt Dohrn. Brad Ableson will be joining as co-director. Gina Shay, a longtime producer of the series, and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri will produce the film.
Based on William Steig’s 1990 fairy tale book Shrek!, the franchise revolves around the adventures of a green ogre named Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers. The series also features an ensemble of characters including Shrek’s loyal sidekick Donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) and Princess Fiona (voiced by Cameron Diaz).
The Shrek series, produced between 2001 and 2010, consists of four feature films. The original Shrek (2001) was a monumental success, grossing USD 485 million globally and winning the first-ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, Shrek 2 (2004), grossed USD 935 million and both films were in competition for Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Though Shrek the Third (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010) received less critical praise, they still performed well at the box office, earning USD 813 million and USD 752 million worldwide, respectively.
The franchise also expanded with two successful Puss in Boots spinoff films, grossing USD 555 million and USD 484 million, respectively. The most recent addition to the franchise, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, was released in December 2022, earning USD 484 million globally and securing an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.
