Dystopian drama series The Handmaid’s Tale, currently streaming on Prime Video for Indian viewers, has begun production for its sixth and final season, the makers said in a social media post recently.

“Guess who’s back? Production on the final season has officially started. #TheHandmaidsTale will return Spring 2025,” the official Instagram page of the show wrote alongside a picture of actress Elisabeth Moss who played the lead character of June Osborne. Moss holds a clapperboard in the photo.

Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale was initially scheduled to begin production last year, aiming for a 2024 premiere. However, the shooting was delayed due to disruptions caused by the writers' and actors' strikes in 2023.

Based on a novel of the same name by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, the show is set in a dystopian future following the Second American Civil War where a theocratic, totalitarian regime enslaves fertile women, known as ‘Handmaids’, forcing them to deliver babies.

Created by Bruce Miller, the series also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Alexis Bledel, Joseph Fiennes, Ann Dowd, Samira Wiley and O-T Fagbenle.

The last season left fans in suspense with several cliffhangers. June Osborne, along with her baby daughter Nichole, was seen escaping on a train headed for Vancouver, while her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) was arrested after protecting her. In a surprising twist, one of the antagonists of the series Serena Joy (Yvonne), with her infant son Noah, boarded the same train, hinting at a possible confrontation or an uneasy alliance between the two women.

The upcoming season is set to delve into the aftermath of these events, with a focus on June’s quest for identity and survival. As reported, Elisabeth Moss suggested that June’s struggle goes beyond her challenges, hinting at a broader narrative at play.

Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video in India and on Hulu in the US.
