Cricket and calypso go back a long way, beginning with Lord Relator’s musical tribute to the original little master, Sunil Gavaskar, right after the Indian opening batsman’s stupendous performance in the 1971 India-West Indies series. Now pop singer Shivangi Sharma of Zee Music’s Roshni fame has followed suit by teaming up with West Indian cricketer-turned-singer Dwayne ‘DJ’ Bravo in her brand-new song Party Party.
Bravo, known for his T20 exploits for the West Indies national team and different IPL teams, shot to fame in the music industry with his 2016 single Champion. “DJ Bravo and I have been friends for a long time. He shared his song Chamiya in 2019 with me. I told him that I liked it. Then he said that it was our time to collaborate on a song,” said Shivangi.
The song is produced by film producer Deepak Mukut under his label SRE Music and the music video is directed by Tejas Dattani. The lavish music video was shot at the Palace of Queens in the UK has come out.
The collaboration was put on hold for two years because of the pandemic. The topic was raised again when Bravo came to India to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022 for Chennai Super Kings. “I had already recorded the song early in 2022. After that, I was traveling abroad for my concerts. Bravo had come to India for the IPL, but I was in the US at the time. He was keen to collaborate, so I sent him the song that I had recorded. We coordinated and I came back to India to be present at his recording,” said Shivangi.
The pop singer, whose first album Sexy Saiyyan brought her success and critical acclaim, said she always felt that her music should carry some message along with entertainment. “Although the new song — Party Party — was initially about girls, I wanted Bravo to give out an important message through that song. It comes before the hook line of the song.
Other than Party Party, Shivangi will soon release another music video titled Same Old Lies, which was shot at Times Square, New York, US. “Same Old Lies is about a guy who is cheating on two women at the same time. The hook line of the song came from a personal turmoil that I went through in my life.”
The inspiration for Same Old Lies comes from Shivangi’s favorite Bollywood song Tumhi Dekho Na from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. “I wanted to make a song like that. Luckily, I was in the US for a concert during the fall season, so things just fell into place. If you envision something strongly, it happens. I am really excited about this song. The song shall be out soon,” said the singer.
