Singer-songwriter Shakira recently unveiled a 21-feet-tall bronze statue of herself depicting her iconic belly dance move from the 2006 chartbuster Hips Don’t Lie in Colombia’s Barranquilla.
“It makes me happy to share this with my parents and especially my mother on her birthday,” wrote the Waka Waka singer on Instagram alongside pictures of her family posing in front of the statue.
The Mayor of Barranquilla was also present at the unveiling of the statue, sculpted by the artist Yino Marques with the support of his students and graduates from the District School of Arts.
A plaque at the foot of the statue carries text about Shakira’s musical achievements as well as her humanitarian projects.
The inscription on the black tablet reads, “A heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses and bare feet that march for the good of childhood and humanity.”
‘Bare feet’ is a reference to the Barefoot Foundation, the Colombian charity for impoverished children founded by Shakira in 1997.
The singer also posted a reel capturing people’s reaction to her statue in her hometown.
The video shows a crowd posing with the statue, carrying the flag of Colombia with Shakira’s name on it.
The three-time Grammy Award winner’s latest collaboration with singer-songwriter Karol G, TQG, debuted at number one on the Billboard Global 200 in March, 2023.
