Pop icon Shakira wooed 40,000 fans with her pop-up concert in New York’s Times Square on Tuesday night, celebrating the release of Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, her first studio album in nearly seven years since 2017’s El Dorado.

Sharing a short clip from the surprise concert on Instagram, Shakira expressed her gratitude to her fans. “What an insane experience!! 40,000 of you in Times Square, I have goosebumps! Thank you for such an amazing welcome and for coming to party with me NY,” the Waka Waka singer wrote alongside the video on Wednesday.

Looking gorgeous in a black ensemble with silver embellishments, the Colombian singer-songwriter opened the show with her 2006 chartbuster Hips Don’t Lie.

Accompanied by a band and a troupe of dancers, Shakira went on to perform tracks from her new album. She set the stage ablaze with a live rendition of Te Felicito, TQM, Cómo Dónde y Cuándo and Puntería, before closing the show with last year's smash hit Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.

The free concert was announced by the three-time Grammy winner on social media, hours before the show went live in The Big Apple. A massive electronic billboard in Times Square also displayed the announcement. The concert was also live streamed on social media for the singer’s international fans.

“New York! Come join me in Times Square for a surprise performance at 7.15pm And you can watch online as it happens WORLDWIDE right here on Instagram and at my official site,” the 47-year-old singer had captioned her announcement on Instagram.

Released on Friday by Sony Music Latin, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran contains 16 tracks and features Shakira’s collaborations with Cardi B, Ozuna, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera.

Shakira was recently honoured with a 21-feet bronze statue of herself in her hometown in Colombia. A plaque at the foot of the statue in Barranquilla carries text about the singer's musical achievements as well as her humanitarian projects.
