Shakira regaled the audience with a medley of her greatest hits at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards in New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, finishing the night with the Vanguard Award for her lifetime achievement in music.

The Colombian singer-songwriter becomes the second South American artiste after Jennifer Lopez to achieve the feat.

Shakira entered the night with a total of 30 nominations and won MTV’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which had previously been bestowed upon Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott.

“I want to thank my parents and my kids, Milan and Sasha, who are here. Thank you so much for cheering me up and making me feel that ‘Mama can do it all,” she said in her acceptance speech.

Shakira kicked off her performance before the awards ceremony with an electrifying rendition of her 2009 hit song She Wolf, incorporating stunning yoga poses. Her next song — her 2005 hit Hips Don’t Lie — made Taylor Swift vibe right from her seat. She concluded her medley with Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53, which featured a collaboration with Argentine DJ Bizarrap.

The 46-year-old singer-songwriter was seen practising with knives before the live performance of her song Hips Don’t Lie in a video posted by the official page of Instagram on Wednesday.

Shakira herself dropped a set of pictures on Sunday from the rehearsal session of her song She Wolf in which the singer is seen enacting various yoga poses.

On Saturday, Shakira shared a reel in which she was seen sitting with her crew and prepping for the awards night. “POV when you’re trying to cram an entire career into one #VMAs Vanguard performance,” her caption reads.
