The 2024 IIFA Awards kicked off with an energetic performance by Shahid Kapoor, who showed why he’s considered one of Bollywood’s finest dancers. Trained by the legendary Shiamak Davar, Shahid began his act with a solo performance of Akhiyan Gulaab, entering the stage on a motorbike to the cheers of excited fans. What started as a solo number quickly escalated into a star-studded medley. Kriti Sanon joined Kapoor for Laal Peeli Akhiyaan. Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor followed suit, joining in for Tera Rang Balle Balle and Nach Punjaban. Together, they delivered a thrilling performance that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Star hosts notch up the fun

When you bring Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Vicky Kaushal together on stage, you’re guaranteed a good time from the get-go. Whether all three were on stage or performing in pairs, their chemistry was effortless. Shah Rukh’s wit, Karan’s self-deprecating humour and Vicky’s easygoing charm ensured there were plenty of laughs. The highlight was a mock fight sequence between Shah Rukh and Vicky that brought the house down.

Vicky Kaushal’s viral performance

Despite his film Bad Newz receiving lukewarm reviews, Vicky Kaushal’s song Tauba Tauba has taken the internet by storm. It was only fitting that Vicky would perform to the viral song during the awards, and he delivered a smooth routine that showcased his dancing chops. Descending onto the stage from a platform, the actor performed a medley of hits including Tere Vaaste, Jagga Jiteya, and Bijli Bijli, before wrapping up his set with Mere Mehboob, joined by young dancers and, to a collective gasp from the audience, Shah Rukh.

Bobby Deol’s emotional speech

Bobby Deol’s powerful Bollywood comeback in Animal was recognised by IIFA with the award for Best Performance in a Negative Role. The audience erupted into cheers when Bobby’s name was officially announced. Fighting back tears, the actor expressed gratitude to the audience and credited his wife for supporting him through his toughest times. He performed his famous Jamal Kuddu step, with a glass tumbler balanced on his head, bowing to the crowd in thanks.

When Shah Rukh won hearts for being a gentleman

Shah Rukh charmed his fans once again with a heartwarming gesture at IIFA. During the course of the awards show, Rani Mukerji came on stage to announce an award. As she greeted host Karan with a hug, Shah Rukh, standing nearby, noticed her sari’s pallu trailing on the floor. He quickly lifted the pallu as Rani made her way to the mic and then gently placed it back down once she was in position. Rani smiled and thanked Shah Rukh for the gesture.

Shah Rukh bows to Hema Malini

Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini received the prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award at the IIFA Awards 2024. Shah Rukh presented the award to the veteran actress. Bridging two generations of Bollywood, the actor escorted Hema to the stage and bowed in front of her before embracing her warmly.

Rekha’s timeless performance

The awards night came to a close with a breathtaking performance by Rekha. Dressed in a stunning pink-and-gold ensemble, adorned with Kundan-style jewels, Rekha brought the house down with a medley of retro songs. Graceful as ever, she danced to classics such as Mohe Panghat Pe, Piya Tose Naina Laage Re and Pardesiya. Choreographed by Ganesh Acharya, the performance once again highlighted why Rekha continues to be an enduring icon of Indian cinema.
