The fourth season of Sex Education is going to drop on Netflix on September 21, and we are ready to dive right back into the lives of Otis, Maeve, Eric and the rest of the Moordale gang. Here’s a recap of the mixed bag of heartwarming moments, heartbreaks and some shocking revelations that Season 3 left us with.

Otis and Ruby's rollercoaster romance

Season 3 saw the unexpected pairing of Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Ruby (Mimi Keene). Their summer fling took an awkward turn when Ruby confessed her love for Otis and Otis remained silent. His heart still belonged to Maeve, causing him to end things with Ruby, leaving her heartbroken.

Hope Haddon’s reign of terror

Moordale Secondary got a new headteacher, Hope Haddon (Jemima Kirke), whose penchant for discipline quickly turned into a nightmare for the students. Hope aimed to rebrand the school, promoting strict rules, abstinence and public shaming of students. The students fought back with a provocative play, but it wasn't enough to save the school. The season ended with Moordale closing its doors, marking the end of an era.

Jean's surprise pregnancy

Otis's mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson), surprised everyone with news of her pregnancy. This development rekindled Jean’s relationship with her ex-flame Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt), who happens to be Ola's father. Things get awkward for Otis as Ola (Patricia Allison), who he had a crush on in the past, moves into their house with her father.

Jean's labour was fraught with complications, leading to a near-death experience. The family welcomed a baby girl, Joy, but a paternity test hinted at a mystery surrounding Joy's parentage.

Eric and Adam's breakup

Eric's (Ncuti Gatwa) trip to Lagos with his family led to a kiss with Oba (Jerry Iwu), a guy he met during the vacation. Upon his return to Moordale, Eric’s relationship with Adam (Connor Swindells) became strained. Eric expressed the need to be with someone who could fully embrace his queerness. Adam took this as an opportunity to come out as bisexual to his mother, finally accepting his true self.

Aimee's struggles post-assault

Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood), who had faced a traumatic assault in the previous season, found it challenging to be intimate with her boyfriend, Steve (Chris Jenks). In a heart-to-heart conversation with Maeve (Emma Mackey) during a school trip, Aimee realised she was too scared to break up with Steve. Eventually, she made the difficult decision to end their relationship.

Cal and Jackson's complex relationship

Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) developed feelings for Cal (Dua Saleh), a non-binary student. However, their relationship was short-lived, as Cal felt that Jackson didn't fully understand their gender identity and queerness. The two decided to part ways, leaving both with valuable lessons about self-discovery and acceptance.

Maeve and Otis at a crossroads

The most anticipated storyline of Season 3 was the Otis-Maeve relationship. Isaac (George Robinson) admitted to deleting Otis's voicemail from the previous season, causing Maeve to break up with him. After Otis's breakup with Ruby and a disastrous school trip to Paris, the two finally admitted their feelings for each other.

But, as fate would have it, Maeve got into a prestigious school in the United States, with her mother supporting her financially. In the season's final scene, Maeve visited Otis to share the bittersweet news. Their love story seemed to be taking a different path, with Maeve promising it was only an ‘until later’.
