Selena Gomez’s musical crime-comedy film Emilia Pérez, helmed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May, the singer-actress announced in an Instagram post on Thursday.
“I’ve been waiting to show you guys this one!! I’m beyond grateful Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, will premiere at @festivaldecannes in May,” the Love On singer wrote alongside character posters of the film.
In the first poster, Selena sports a floral blazer and bleached short hair. She stands in a room dimly lit by neon lights. The second picture shows the Single Soon singer’s co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the titular character in the film. She wears a bra and floral skirt, and shows her rear profile in the portrait. Zoe Saldana features in the third photo, striking a dynamic pose in a bright red pantsuit.
The film’s distributor Pathé Films also shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), which was retweeted by the official X page of Cannes Film Festival.
“#JacquesAudiard, returns to the cinema this year with #EmiliaPerez, a film carried by @zoesaldana, @karsiagascon, @selenagomez, @adrianapazz and @edgarramirez25. The film is in #SelectionOfficielle in #Compétition to @Festival_Cannes 2024. In theatres August 28. #Cannes2024,” Pathé Films wrote.
“Mexico, today. Lawyer Rita receives an unexpected offer. She has to help a feared cartel boss retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he's always dreamed of,” reads the official synopsis of the film on IMDb.
Selena’s film will be screened alongside Yórgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness starring Poor Things actors Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe, Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, and Paul Schrader’s Oh Canada featuring Richard Gere in the ‘In Competition’ section of the 77th edition of the film festival.
Emilia Pérez is Selena’s latest film venture. She is currently filming the fourth season of the Hulu crime-comedy series Only Murders in the Building in which she stars alongside Martin Short and Steve Martin. Selena will also reunite with her Wizards of the Waverly Place co-star David Henrie for a reboot of the sitcom series.
Also starring Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramírez, Emilia Pérez is slated to release in theatres on August 28.
